Pastoral Care

SECONDARY SCHOOL
PASTORAL CARE

Our dedication to high standards of pastoral care is evident in every aspect of school life, from our values, our learning environment and the way social and emotional learning is cultivated in the curriculum.

At Sharjah English School, we pride ourselves on the pastoral and wellbeing provision we offer our students.  We believe that pastoral care is the essential foundation upon which learning can take place. There are times in our students’ lives when they face various social, emotional, academic or family issues for which they may need support. At SES, we work closely as a team to ensure our students’ concerns are addressed in close collaboration with our parents.

Pastoral and academic care in the Secondary School are carried out primarily through the House System. Students in Y7 to 13 are divided into 5 mixed houses; Falcons, Geckos, Lynxes, Foxes and Stingrays, always ensuring that siblings are allocated to the same house. We have a vertical tutor group system that allows students from Y7 to 11 to relate to and empower each other as well as develop leadership skills. Our vertical tutor groups foster a sense of belonging, connection and appreciation for diversity. The Head of House has overall responsibility for the academic and social and emotional development of the students in their house, while the form tutors are the main point of contact for students’ and parents’ needs.

The five houses provide a wonderful opportunity for many different activities at SES. Each academic year we host house sporting and non-sporting activities.

The activities not only allow students to explore their talents, they also allow them to practise and develop the character and social skills that will be of critical importance to them in later life.

Parents are encouraged to develop a relationship with their son or daughter’s tutor and also their Head of House so that the school and parents can work together to help each child fulfil their potential.

Our dedication to high standards of pastoral care is evident in every aspect of school life, from our values, our learning environment and the way social and emotional learning is cultivated in the curriculum. Every week, students have the opportunity to discuss relevant topics such as healthy friendships and conflict resolution during Moral Education, which is complemented with assemblies, events and celebrations. All our House activities are planned around a core view: happy, healthy students are enthusiastic learners and positive members of our community.

Our commitment to pastoral care is also evident in the friendly, approachable and respectful student-staff relationships.

Students are treated as individuals by their Heads of House, form tutors and teachers and active communication is encouraged in all areas of student life. Our objective is to ensure that students enjoy coming to school; we emphasise the development of courage and curiosity in our students throughout all the experiences that we offer. The courage to explore beyond what is in front of them, but especially, the courage to want to know more about themselves and each other to become kinder, more understanding, skilled communicators and better people - and the curiosity to challenge themselves to practise the skills they need, ensuring that they thrive at SES as their authentic selves.
