Music

PRIMARY MUSIC

Encouraging every child’s innate abilities and interest in Music.

Participating in Music lessons contributes to a child’s wellbeing, sense of community and cognitive development. Within Primary Music, we aim to provide a robust and sequential curriculum, with ample opportunities for extracurricular participation. We seek to develop student’s musical literacy, confidence in their musical skills, and to prepare them for future engagement with music, both in and outside school.

CURRICULUM MUSIC

Within all phases of school, children explore a variety of performance, composition, and listening activities.

Foundation Stage
The curriculum in Foundation Stage centres on developing beat, vocal skills, and fine motor skills to play a variety of percussion instruments.
Y1/2 - Infants
In Infants, we continue developing key skills, this is done through exploring the music of various cultures including: Ghanaian, Chinese, Maori, and Western Classical.
Y3/4 - Middle
In Middle, children continue to explore a variety of styles and traditions, with a view to developing greater musicianship, full class ensemble skills, notation reading, and mastery of an instrument (the Recorder, which is studied in Year 4).
Y5/6 - Upper
In Upper, children are challenged to demonstrate greater independence in their Musical learning, with an increased emphasis on projects, group tasks, and chamber ensemble work. Their work culminates with their participation in a musical at the end of Year 6.
Music is an essential part of a child’s life and education and contributes to a child’s wellbeing, sense of community and cognitive development.
